Why do we sing so many new songs? The Scriptures tell us to “sing to the Lord a new song” (Pss. 96:1, 98:1, 149:1) and to “let the Word of Christ dwell in us richly...as we sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in our hearts to God.” (Colossians 3:16)—We see it this way: psalms=scripture songs, hymns=hymns, spiritual songs=new, contemporary songs. We learn new songs, but not to the exclusion of the psalms and hymns. Back to TopBut aren't the hymns more intellectual and the choruses so repetitive and trite? The hymns, written in verse form in the contemporary language of that particular culture, are likely to cover more than one truth within that song. On the other hand, the choruses that we sing (written in the style language that we use every day) are likely to concentrate on one truth. As for their being repetitive—this is proven to be one of the best methods of learning. Some choruses are taken directly from Scripture and are set to a contemporary style of music. We do not take the stand that one is wrong and the other is right. We do attempt to use the best of both in a blend of styles that will be pleasing to God. Back to TopWhen we sing, why do we use words projected onto a screen instead of a hymnal?Using projected slides allows us to use songs from an unlimited number of sources as opposed to only one hymnal. For example, it allows us to use many “vertical” songs (songs sung to the Lord as opposed to only songs about Him) that are found in countless chorus books. Bible Church subscribes yearly to Christian Copyright Licensing Inc, so that we can remain within copyright laws where we copy words for congregational use. In addition, projecting words allows the congregation to better understand the text of the song because it is written in paragraph form as one would speak it, with no music to confuse worshipers. Lastly, projecting words onto a screen lifts people’s heads and helps them to be more involved in singing to the LORD (as opposed to singing to a book). Back to TopI have an idea that could enhance our worship services. Who can I talk to?We certainly welcome comments and ideas. We are constantly looking for ways to improve what we are doing. To share your idea you may contact our Worship Leader, our Pastors, or any of our Elders. If you wish, you may use the response form on our feedback page to communicate your comment; it helps to have something in writing! Also, you may e-mail us. Back to Top |
